Batavia Community Band is Looking for Members

City of Batavia Logo

The city of Batavia is creating a community band for adults. This group would perform at various holiday and special city events throughout the year, such as the Celebration of Lights on the Riverwalk, the 4th of July sky show concert, Veterans Day and Memorial day celebrations, and other possible dates.

We are looking for enthusiastic musicians older than high school age who would like to contribute their talents; the goal of this group is to be flexible, informal, and fun. Practices would only be held a few times prior to each performance; members would sign up for each event as their schedules allow. Thus, this group would be perfect for musical hobbyists who only have the time to play occasionally throughout the year. This is a volunteer endeavor; no stipends will be paid. Mr. John Heath, retired Batavia High School band director, will be the director of this group.

If you would like to participate in the Batavia Community Band, please email Linda Schielke at to reserve a seat, and explain what instrument you play.

No formal tryouts will be necessary, but the ability to read sheet music is required. Please bring your instrument and stand (if you have them; if not, please state that in your email) to the first practice which we’re hoping to have the week of November 4th.

Our first performance would be a brief concert at the Peg Bond Center on the Riverwalk on Sunday, December 1, at 5:30 for the Celebration of Lights tree lighting ceremony.

Recruitment for this band will be ongoing so if you cannot commit now, please contact us in the future. If you have instruments or music stands you could donate to this effort but do not wish to participate yourself, we would appreciate hearing from you, also.

Stringed instruments are also welcome. All performances will take place in Batavia. Please email us with your interest by Halloween (Oct.31) if you’d like to perform in the Dec. 1 concert.
